Basic Steps to a Healthy Pregnancy

Miraculously, many women apparently have a healthy pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby without any thought at all. However, many are not so lucky, and sometimes it perfectly healthy baby has health problems from the beginning, as rashes, allergies, ear infections, etc. As an obstetrical nurse with 40 years experience in childbirth and prenatal education, I encourage you not to let the health of your pregnancy and baby random. Take steps now to be healthier.

Start with a good physique midwife or MD. Ask your doctor about a thyroid panel and the level of vitamin D. Make sure your iron stores are good. If you are vegetarian, ask your doctor about supplementation of vitamin B12. Begin your prenatal vitamins and minerals and of course, if you do not quit now. The effects of one cigarette a day after the fourth month of pregnancy are still detectable after 10 years.

Take a good look at your diet. Write down everything you eat for three days, then check the list below.

1: 7 daily colors: Blue - blue berries, elderberries;
Violet - plums, grapes, red cabbage;
Red - tomatoes, radishes, cherries, red peppers, red onions;
Yellow - lemon, mango, lemon, grapefruit, yellow tomato, grapefruit;
White - cauliflower, onions, garlic;
Orange - oranges, tangerines, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes and yams;
Green - lettuce (not ice burg), celery, cilantro, parsley, cabbage, Napa cabbage, kale, organic spinach, Swiss chard,

2: 7-9 servings of fruits and vegetables

3: complete protein with each meal (pregnancy, lactation and children) *

4: Good fats - olive oil, grape seed oil, omega 3 raw seeds and nuts

5. Whole grains 3-4 servings for pregnant women

6. Get rid of calories without food value-pop, chips, candy, etc.

7. Limit or eliminate white - white flour, white rice and sugar in all its forms.

This may seem overwhelming. Do not let it be. Just start educating yourself and go to that list based on food intake.

Last but not least, plan your first prenatal soon as you have designed. Information obtained in the first quarter is used to treat pregnancy complications should arise.

* Complete proteins derived from the combination of several protein sources. Generally, meat, fish, poultry and the milk have a more complete protein balance. Egg whites are the best.
